Bernice Perreira is an Amerindian woman who survived a plane crash in the Pakaraima Mountain region in Guyana, South America. She extricated her five year old son who survived the crash, and her infant who sadly did not. She then successfully trekked many miles through the jungle with her son and dead baby.
She made it back to her village where she and her son received much needed medical attention. Word spread about her heroism and as a result, Mrs. Perreira was flown to the capitol, Georgetown. Bernice was visited by the Mothers Union Parenting Group of the Anglican Diocese of Guyana. In addition to food, clothing and money, the Group also presented her with a plaque for bravery and courage.The inscription reads in part: “The love of a mother, the strength of a parent, the will to survive…
These actions were a tribute to an extraordinary woman and an extraordinary story.
